Architectural ornament (Singa), Toba Batak village, Sumatra, Indonesia, 20th century Carved wood. Dimensions: 32 × 22 × 60 cm. A traditional architectural sculpture known as a Singa, used by the Toba Batak people of Sumatra as a protective element on the façades of communal houses (rumah adat). It depicts a mythological creature combining human and animal features, a symbol of strength and fertility, believed to ward off evil spirits and attract prosperity. An elegantly designed and well-proportioned piece, carved from hardwood with a natural patina that enhances its age. Provenance: private collection.
