Description
Bell currency, Dowayo village, Cameroon, 20th century Wrought iron. Dimensions: 105 × 44 × 18 cm. A unique traditional metal artefact from the Dowayo people of northern Cameroon, used as a form of ceremonial currency and a symbol of social status. These large bells, with their deep sound, were also used in marriage rituals and as dowry, as well as representing wealth and prestige within the community. The surface retains a beautiful ferruginous patina that bears witness to its age and ritual use. Provenance: private collection. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
