Bridal Hoe Currency, Afo village, Nigeria, 20th century Wrought iron. Dimensions: 84 × 57 × 18 cm. An ancient form of ritual currency used by the Afo people in Nigeria, commonly offered as a dowry or as a symbol of alliance between families. Hand-forged, this piece is shaped like a hoe, an agricultural tool symbolising fertility, labour and prosperity. In addition to its economic value, it held profound social and spiritual significance within the community. It has a dark, even patina that highlights its authenticity and age. Provenance: private collection. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
