Description
Portrait of a Man Sharpening His Quill, After Rembrandt, Circle of Rembrandt, Dutch School, 17th century Oil on canvas. Overall dimensions including frame: 88 × 74 cm. This portrait depicts a seated man in dark attire with a broad white ruff, holding a quill as he sharpens it with a small knife. His calm, direct gaze engages the viewer, whilst the restrained composition and subtle play of light emphasise the face, hands and writing implements. Painted after Rembrandt and attributed to the Circle of Rembrandt, the work reflects the 17th-century Dutch Baroque tradition, characterised by psychological depth, naturalistic modelling, and the dramatic use of light and shadow. The original composition is currently held in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The painting has undergone restoration.
