Bust of a Roman Emperor with Pedestal, Italian School (Impruneta), 20th–21st century Modelled terracotta. Dimensions including pedestal: height 72 cm; width 58 cm; depth 28 cm; pedestal diameter 21 cm. A monumental bust conceived in direct dialogue with the iconographic tradition of Roman imperial portraiture, depicting a male figure of dignified bearing with his head slightly turned and a composed, authoritative expression. The finely modelled beard and tightly curled hair frame the face with striking three-dimensional clarity, whilst the emperor is shown wearing a military cuirass adorned at the centre with a relief of the Gorgon Medusa, an apotropaic symbol traditionally associated with protection and power in Roman imagery. A draped cloak falls naturally over one shoulder, introducing a sense of movement and enhancing the sculptural rhythm of the composition.
