Description
George III sideboard in mahogany and other woods with a satin finish, English School, 18th century
Mahogany and other woods. Dimensions: 118 x 171 x 72 cm. An 18th-century English sideboard, designed in the style of the reign of George III, with a rectangular structure and a front arrangement comprising two upper drawers above two doors. The surface is adorned with satinwood bands and purflings that enhance the composition, framing the central panels with geometric elegance. The doors feature moulded decoration characterised by classical restraint, whilst the bronze handles and fittings provide a metallic counterpoint with a refined finish. The piece rests on solid zoomorphic legs that evoke animal forms, an ornamental motif steeped in symbolism that was widespread in Georgian aesthetics. The quality of the craftsmanship is evident in the harmonious proportions of its forms, the precision of the details, and the polished finish that enhances the warm tones of the mahogany, set against the satinwood purfling. Its style reflects 18th-century British taste, combining functionality and understated ornamentation within the prevailing neoclassical spirit. It retains minor defects consistent with its age, but overall it remains in good condition and constitutes a significant piece of English furniture from the George III period.
