Bronze clock and candlestick set featuring a lion. French School. 19th century. Veined marble and gilt bronze. Dimensions: clock 58 x 33 x 13 cm; candlesticks 39 x 11 x 11 cm. A 19th-century French mantelpiece comprising a central clock and two side candlesticks. The clock, crowned by a gilt bronze lion, is set upon a base and columns of veined marble in shades of pink, which lend it a monumental character. The candlesticks, of a classical design, are modelled on bronze and marble urns with finely carved details. The ensemble evokes the 19th-century neoclassical aesthetic, in which the fusion of noble materials and symbolic ornamentation conveyed prestige and refinement.
