Christ crucified with mourners. Signed Fco Puerto, Spanish school, 20th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 138 x 80 cm. A scene from Calvary showing Christ nailed to the cross, his head bowed and his body silhouetted against an intensely red sky. At his feet are several grieving figures: a woman who has fainted and is being supported by another, a kneeling figure wearing a turban, and another in a contemplative pose, all set against the distant silhouette of the city. The white loincloth stands out against the crucified Christ’s anatomy and draws the light to the central figure, whilst the vertical line of the cross organises the entire composition.
