Description
Large Mexican Colonial Carving of Saint Francis, 17th–18th century Polychrome wood carving. Measures 150 x 70 x 36 cm. Much of its original polychromy remains. A three-dimensional depiction of a standing Franciscan saint, with a tonsure, short beard, and habit featuring wide sleeves and a large hood folded over the shoulders. In his left hand, he holds a model of a church with a façade, bell gable and portal—an attribute central to his iconographic identification—whilst his right hand is extended in an expressive gesture. The figure stands on a rectangular base and wears a pink tunic with a greyish cloak, featuring wide, heavy folds that fall vertically on both sides.
