Description
Virgin of Guadalupe. Mexican School. 18th century Oil on panel. The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is depicted in full face, with her hands clasped in prayer and her head bowed, her expression serene and composed. The blue mantle, studded with gold stars, frames the figure, contrasting with the radiant halo that surrounds her, composed of golden rays evoking divinity and Marian revelation. Beneath her feet, the crescent moon held by an angel recalls traditional Guadalupe iconography originating in New Spain. This popularly executed painting features a flat rendering of form, with warm colours and defined lines, emphasising the devotional nature of the image. The work is part of the tradition of colonial religious painting, in which the Virgin of Guadalupe stands as an emblem of the spiritual and cultural identity of New Spain. A work of great symbolic and visual significance, its presence in the domestic or ecclesiastical sphere expressed faith, divine protection and viceregal tradition. Dimensions: 28 cm x 20 cm; with frame: 37 cm x 28 cm.
