Biblical scene depicting Christ and a saint. Colonial School. 18th century. Oil on panel. The composition depicts a mystical encounter between Christ, carrying the cross, and a Dominican saint—possibly Saint Catherine of Siena—who embraces him in a gesture of ecstatic devotion. Attending angels, flying cherubs and a dove—a symbol of the Holy Spirit—reinforce the supernatural nature of the episode. The pyramidal arrangement and the use of intense colours—pink, blue and gold—intensify the Baroque theatricality, whilst the delicately modelled faces emphasise the pathos of the scene. Technical elements, such as the perspective of the architectural background and the lighting effects, reveal a pictorial sensibility that ties in with the devotional tradition of the eighteenth-century Hispanic school.
