Description
Virgin and Child. Spanish School. 18th century
Polychrome wood carving. A religious sculpture in the round depicting the standing Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus in her left arm. Both figures are crowned with a raised golden radiance, highlighting the sacred nature of the scene. The rendering of the folds in the dress, particularly the blue mantle adorned with gold stars and the gold-lined edges, reflects the detailed ornamental work characteristic of the Spanish-American Baroque. The soft complexions, serene features and composed posture convey devotion and balance, whilst the gilding of the robes emphasises the celestial dimension of the Marian figure. The well-preserved polychromy enhances the expressiveness of the ensemble, as does the moulded pedestal, which reinforces its devotional function. This piece reflects the Baroque ideal of the exaltation of the sacred and is representative of 18th-century devotional sculpture. Dimensions: 90 x 37 x 27 cm.
