RUBENS AND WORKSHOP (Siegen, 1577–Antwerp, 1640) – The Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem Oil on copper plate. A depiction of the messianic Entry of Christ into Jerusalem, a biblical passage that marks the beginning of Holy Week and symbolises the spiritual proclamation of the Messiah. Christ, mounted on a donkey in a majestic yet restrained pose, advances towards the viewer surrounded by his disciples, whilst a crowd acclaims him with palm branches and jubilant gestures. The deeply narrative composition is structured across several levels of depth: on the left, the apostles advance in a compact group; in the centre, Jesus raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing; on the right, women, children and men express popular fervour, with the figure of a child perched on a palm tree—symbolising the cut branches—standing out. The cityscape in the background, rendered using atmospheric perspective, frames the scene within an idealised Jerusalem. The precise brushwork, the rich colour scheme—particularly the use of red, blue and ochre—and the copper support contribute to a vibrant luminosity and detailed definition of the modelling.
