*The Asylum*, following the style of Goya, by Leonardo Alenza y Nieto (Madrid, 1807–1845), 19th-century Spanish school Oil on canvas, framed dimensions: 94 x 80, canvas dimensions: 72 x 58 cm. Certified by Arnáiz and published. He produced small-format costumbrista works, lively portraits in which he skilfully imbued his subjects with expressiveness and psychological depth, as well as numerous drawings. Brown and muted tones predominate in his palette, a legacy of the more sober Goya and the Black Paintings, to which he also draws parallels in the themes chosen for many of his works: the marginalised, the condemned… It is not for nothing that Aureliano de Beruete considered him the most important of the painters influenced by Goya. Examples of this are *El viatico* and *El gallego de los curritos* (Prado). In the former, he produces an interesting study of light, which is concentrated on the figure of the priest carrying the viaticum and contrasts with the figure in the foreground, who appears from behind against the light, whilst around him several others kneel as the Blessed Sacrament passes. Another aspect of Alenza’s work to bear in mind is that he was a chronicler of his time; evidence of this can be seen in the paintings commissioned for the Café de Levante, some examples of which are preserved in the Museum.
