Mariano Nanni, Still Life of Fish with a Cat, 18th-century Italian school Oil on canvas. Canvas dimensions: 100 x 80 cm. Framed dimensions: 110 x 85 cm. Mariano Nani (Naples, c. 1725 – Madrid, 1804¹), a prominent Italian painter active in Spain, specialising in still life painting, began working with his father in 1755 at the royal porcelain factory in Capodimonte, holding the title of ‘painter-decorator’.² He moved to Spain in 1759 as part of Charles III’s entourage. Having settled in Madrid, he contributed his designs to the creation of the Real Fábrica de Porcelanas del Buen Retiro, whilst continuing to paint still lifes and miniatures. In 1764, the year in which the *Still Life with Lamb and Birds* in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando is dated, he was admitted to this institution as an academician of merit. His style is characterised by marked influences from Paul de Vos and Flemish painting, interpreted with a dramatic sensibility and vibrant colours. This can be seen in works such as *A Dog and a Cat Fighting over a Pigeon* (Royal Palace of Aranjuez) or in some of the large-game hunting scenes intended as cartoons for tapestries, such as the two preserved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, currently in storage at the Prado Museum: *Bear and Deer Hunting* and *Deer Hunting*. Provenance: an important private collection in Madrid.
