Manuel Rodríguez de Guzmán, Bullfighter, 19th-century Sevillian school Oil on canvas, framed dimensions: 65 x 55, canvas dimensions: 80 x 70 cm. Manuel Rodríguez de Guzmán (Seville, 20 June 1818–Madrid, 1867), a Spanish painter of the Romantic period who distinguished himself in the depiction of costumbrista themes. In 1854 he began working in Madrid for the British ambassador, carrying out a number of commissions for the court whilst part of the Andalusian circle of Antonio María Esquivel and José Gutiérrez de la Vega, and as a very active member of the Society for the Protection of Fine Arts, founded by the former. Among his most representative paintings are scenes of Andalusian folk life, such as the Santiponce Fair (1855, Prado Museum), considered his masterpiece, and the Rocío Procession (1853, National Heritage). In 1856, he received an honourable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts for a painting inspired by Cervantes’ novel *Rinconete y Cortadillo*, depicting the Monipodio courtyard in the style of his most characteristic costumbrista scenes.
