Description
Boys in the Garden, Asterio Miñanos (Palencia, 21 October 1861–Madrid, c. 1935), Spanish school of the 19th–20th centuries
Canvas dimensions: 74 x 39 cm; framed dimensions: 92 x 57 cm. Asterio Mañanós began his training at the Municipal School of Palencia, where he was taught by Justo María de Velasco, and later passed the entrance examination for the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, which he entered in 1877. Whilst in the capital, he also attended the studios of Casto Plasencia and Casado del Alisal, as well as the Prado Museum, where he made copies of Velázquez’s works. In 1881, he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. From then on, he divided his time between Madrid and Palencia, where he was commissioned to design the curtains and backstage sets for the Teatro de Recreo Palentino. Asterio Mañanós’s works are currently held in the Prado Museum, the Royal Academy of History and other major collections, both public and private.
