Brave Bull, Roberto Domingo Fallola (Paris, 1883–Madrid, 1956), 19th-century Spanish school Oil on canvas; canvas dimensions: 66 x 50 cm; framed dimensions: 71 x 55 cm. Paris, 1883–Madrid, 1956. A Spanish costumbrista painter who specialised in bullfighting themes, which brought him great fame and prestige. He contributed as a cartoonist to publications of the time. He began his artistic training in Paris under his father, the painter Francisco Domingo Marqués. There he became acquainted with the work of the French Impressionists. In 1906 he settled in Madrid, where he studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts under Antonio Muñoz Degrain. He exhibited at national and international exhibitions; at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1908 he was awarded the third medal, and at those held in 1910 and 1915, he won the second and first medals respectively for the paintings entitled *Suerte de varas* and *El coleo*. He exhibited his works at the Pabellón de Bellas Artes in Rome in 1911 and regularly in galleries in Spain and London, such as Baillie and Tooth, amongst others. His work is characterised by a spontaneous use of colour to capture reality, drawing on the tradition of Goya, Lucas and Alenza.
