Important 14th-century Gothic stone sculpture of Christ A carved and polychromed limestone sculpture depicting Christ in Piety, standing with his arms crossed over his chest, bound by a rope, his head slightly bowed, and wearing a simple band or crown. The bearded face, with its grave and resigned features, conveys a profound spiritual depth. This iconography, widespread in the late Middle Ages, refers to the suffering Christ presented to the faithful following the Passion, serving an essentially devotional purpose. The sober yet expressive rendering of the face, the simplified forms of the body, and the pronounced frontality are characteristic of the late Gothic tradition, prior to the introduction of Renaissance canons. Traces of the original polychromy are visible, particularly reds and flesh tones. The reverse has been roughly hollowed out, suggesting an architectural purpose. Wear, loss of polychromy, small dents and surface alterations are consistent with age and liturgical use. The piece is intact and has not been reassembled. France.
