Description
19TH CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL - Portrait of a young woman from the Belle Époque
Oil on oval canvas. Dimensions: 80 x 59 cm. Portrait of an elegant young woman depicted against a backdrop of vegetation, probably in a greenhouse or winter garden, a setting particularly favoured in bourgeois painting since the time of Napoleon III. The figure is smiling, wearing a hat and a refined silvery-white satin dress, rendered with remarkable virtuosity and special attention to the effects of light and the quality of the fabrics, which lend the composition a marked grace and worldly distinction. The work is reminiscent of the work of portrait painters active between 1890 and 1910, at the crossroads between late academicism and a more modern sensibility, within the spirit of the great society portraits of the late 19th century, close to the aesthetic universe of painters such as Giovanni Boldini or John Singer Sargent. It retains its original carved and gilded wooden frame. Very good condition. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-community shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
