Description
The pigeons. Jiménez Fernández, Federico Madrid, (1841, 1910)
Oil on canvas. Canvas dimensions: 95 x 55 cm; with frame: 109 x 67 cm. Spanish painter. He studied at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, later going to Paris to further his training. He specialised in painting domestic animals and poultry. The Judgment of Paris and Two Hares and a Dead Partridge (Prado Museum) are two examples of this genre, which was not very developed in Spain. He also painted portraits, most notably that of Don Agustín Argüelles (Ateneo Museum, Madrid). At the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, he received an honorable mention in 1858 and 1860, a third medal in 1862 for the canvas entitled A Painting with Dead Game, and a decoration in the editions of 1878 and 1895. He was also awarded a silver medal at the International Exhibition of Bayonne in 1864 and the art medal at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873. He was distinguished with the appointment of Commander of the Order of Charles III (Burguera, B. in: MNP Encyclopedia, 2006, Volume IV, p. 1349).
