Description
The Death of the Virgin. Flemish Master from Antwerp, 17th Century. Oil on copper. Dimensions: 114 cm x 85 cm and 124 cm x 96 cm (framed). This scene of great compositional complexity depicts the Virgin Mary's passing, surrounded by the apostles, arranged on different planes and in attitudes of contemplation, wonder, and prayer. The Virgin lies on her bier, her face serene and her hands clasped, while the surrounding figures intensify the drama of the moment through expressive gestures. Above, angels enter the scene, providing a celestial counterpoint. The copper technique allows for precise brushwork and intense colour, with a wealth of detail and striking contrasts of light. The work reflects the Flemish models of the Antwerp School of the second half of the 17th century, standing out for its theatricality, narrative depth, and technical quality.
