Description
Attributed to JOSÉ DE PÁEZ (Mexico City, 1721-1780) - Our Lady of the Angels/ New Spanish Colonial School, 18th century
Oil on copper. Dimensions: 47 x 34 cm; 68 x 55 cm. This delicate painting depicts the crowned Virgin in a central position, surrounded by angels. Saint Joseph, holding a flowering rod, and a donor kneel at her feet in an attitude of prayer. The scene, framed by a mystical glow, stands out for its vibrant colours and attention to detail in the faces, clothing, and halos. The workmanship reveals the enameled brushwork characteristic of 18th-century New Spain viceregal painting, especially the work of José de Páez, heir to Juan Rodríguez Juárez. The copper support enhances the nuances of the light, and the ornate frame highlights the devotional character.
