Description
17th Century Cuzco School - Virgin of Angustias
Dimensions: 137 × 90 cm.
Oil on canvas. The Virgin of Angustias is presented with the body of the dead Christ in her lap, while two angels assist her in her pain. The iconography of the Virgin in the Andean tradition is fused with European elements, showing an expression of contained suffering, characteristic of the Cuzco style. The vibrant colours, especially in the mantles and ornaments, enhance the popular devotion and cultural syncretism that defines this school. The fine brushwork and the detail in the embroidery of the costumes provide a sense of ornamental richness, typical of the viceregal artistic production of Peru.
