Description
St. Anthony and the Child Jesus, Portuguese colonial school in Goa, 17th century Polychrome and gilded wood. A devotional sculpture in the round depicting Saint Anthony of Padua in a frontal position, holding an open book in his left hand, over which stands the infant figure of the Child Jesus, in a gesture of tenderness as he touches the saint's face. The image displays a rich polychrome finish with gilded floral motifs on the Franciscan habit, characterised by its cord and hood. The saint's face, serene and contemplative, together with the Child's dynamic gesture, establishes a spiritual dialogue charged with theological and emotional symbolism. The anatomical treatment of the hands and the modeling of the face demonstrate a precise and detailed execution, typical of Hispanic sacred art of the period. The carving is characterised by a vertical composition and a light volumetric schematization, with restrained use of gilding as an expressive resource. This piece is part of the 17th-century Spanish Baroque tradition, linked to conventual religious sculpture, where the figure of Saint Anthony with the Child embodied one of the most widespread themes of Franciscan spirituality. Due to its excellent state of preservation and technical quality, this sculpture is a prime example of the devotional fervour and aesthetic sensibility of its time. Dimensions: 61 cm.
