Description
Bust of a Roman Emperor with Pedestal, Italian School (Impruneta), 20th - 21st Century
Modelled terracotta. Measurements including pedestal: height 72 cm; width 58 cm; depth 28 cm; pedestal diameter 21 cm. Monumental bust conceived in direct dialogue with the iconographic tradition of Roman imperial portraiture, depicting a male figure of dignified bearing with the head slightly turned and a composed, authoritative expression. The finely modelled beard and tightly curled hair frame the face with strong volumetric clarity, while the emperor is shown wearing a military cuirass adorned at the centre with a relief of the Gorgon Medusa, an apotropaic symbol traditionally associated with protection and power in Roman imagery. A draped cloak falls naturally over one shoulder, introducing a sense of movement and enhancing the sculptural rhythm of the composition. The modelling displays a refined balance between smooth facial planes and more pronounced detailing in the hair and armor, achieving a clear and harmonious visual reading. Executed in Impruneta terracotta, a material historically linked to Tuscan sculptural and architectural traditions, the piece is characterized by a warm tonal quality and a matte surface that reinforces its classical evocation. This work belongs to contemporary production inspired by Classical Antiquity, reinterpreting Roman aesthetic canons with technical fidelity and modern sensibility, and stands as a decorative sculpture of strong visual presence, suitable for both interior settings and architectural contexts.
