Description
Christ of Limoges, 12th century - French School, 12th-13th century
Enamel on copper. Measures 10 x 7 x 0.5 cm. Small figure of Christ crucified, made using the champlevé enamel technique, with the body facing forward and arms outstretched in a hieratic and solemn pose. The face, with its schematic features, conveys a restrained spirituality, in keeping with Romanesque aesthetics. The modeling is flat and simplified, prioritizing symbolic clarity over anatomical naturalism. The enameled surface retains traces of colour and a patina softened by time, reflecting its age and devotional use. These pieces, produced in the workshops of Limos, played a fundamental role in the dissemination of medieval sacred art, and this work belongs to the liturgical and devotional repertoire of the 12th and 13th centuries. 10 x 7 x 0.5 cm
