Description
San Sebastián. Navarrese School of Juan de Anchieta or Ancheta, 16th Century.
Carved and polychromed wood. Measures 64 cm x 32 cm x 25 cm. This sculpture in the round depicts Saint Sebastian tied to a tree trunk, his naked body barely covered by a golden loincloth, pierced by arrows that intensify the drama of the scene. The figure adopts a slightly contrapposto pose, with his torso turned and his face raised, displaying a serene and resigned expression, accentuating the devotional character of the work. The polychromy, with its warm and nuanced tones, reinforces the anatomical naturalism and the careful treatment of the musculature. The carving reveals a solid and expressive craftsmanship, typical of Navarrese sculpture from the second half of the 16th century, linked to the formal ideals of the late Renaissance. Despite the missing phalanges of the hand, the piece retains a remarkable visual and spiritual power, constituting a significant example of religious imagery from the period.
