Description
Sculpture of the Virgin of Granada in carved and polychrome wood, attributed to Mora or his workshop, Granada School, 17th century
Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 61 x 51 x 38 cm. This Virgin of Sorrows, executed with extraordinary delicacy in its features and with vividly contrasting polychromy, displays the expressive intensity characteristic of the Granada Baroque. The half-open mouth, the raised eyes, and the hands clasped in a supplicating gesture convey a profound religious drama. The golden embossing and the intense blue of the mantle accentuate the ornamental richness and spirituality of the image. The attribution to the workshop of José de Mora reflects the stylistic proximity in the treatment of the face and the ability to move the faithful through its restrained theatricality. This is a highly significant piece of Spanish Baroque sculpture, representative of the 17th century.
