Stone of Vituperation or Lapis Vituperii, Italy, 19th century Carved stone. Measurements: height 40 cm; diameter 50 cm. A unique piece of considerable historical and symbolic interest, linked to the ancient public practice of humiliating insolvent debtors, who were forced to sit upon this stone in a shameful ritual by which they declared their renunciation of their assets. This tradition is associated with the well-known expression "to be left penniless" or "to be ruined".
