Description
Stone of Vituperation or Lapis Vituperii, Italy, 19th century Carved stone. Measurements: height 40 cm; diameter 50 cm. A unique piece of considerable historical and symbolic interest, linked to the ancient public practice of humiliating insolvent debtors, who were forced to sit upon this stone in a shameful ritual by which they declared their renunciation of their assets. This tradition is associated with the well-known expression "to be left penniless" or "to be ruined". It is an object of great evocative power, exceptional for its typological rarity and the almost unique nature of its meaning within the legal and social culture of bygone eras. With its imposing presence and considerable weight, it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor display, possessing historical, sculptural, and cultural value. It is presented in very good condition and is complete. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
