Description
Monumental and Exceptional Greek Krater from the 3rd century BC with Medusa and Handles topped with Deities, Magna Graecia, in terracotta
Monumental Canosan krater with figures of Medusa and deities, Canosa, Italy. Late 4th - 3rd century B.C. Approximate dimensions: 75 x 50 x 50 cm. An exceptional large-format piece from Canosa di Puglia, in southern Italy, a region culturally integrated into the sphere of Magna Graecia.
This monumental terracotta krater, dated between the late 4th and 3rd centuries B.C., presents a rich relief iconography centered on the figure of Medusa, a protective and apotropaic divinity in the Greek imagination, accompanied on the handles by sculpted representations of deities that reinforce the ceremonial and symbolic character of the piece. The krater's body, rounded and with a flat base, corresponds to the type known as large Canosan askos, characteristic of the funerary production of Canosa.
On the front, a large Medusa head in relief stands out, with thick curls, a slightly open mouth, and prominent eyes.
Its monumentality, formal refinement, and rich iconography make it an outstanding testament to Hellenistic sculptural ceramics from southern Italy. Provenance: Important European private collection.
