Description
Important Gothic Christ in stone from the 14th century
Carved and polychromed limestone sculpture depicting Christ in Piety, standing with arms crossed over his chest, bound by a rope, head slightly inclined, and wearing a simple band or crown. The bearded face, with its grave and resigned features, expresses a profound spiritual interiority. This iconography, widespread in the late Middle Ages, refers to the suffering Christ presented to the faithful after the Passion, with an essentially devotional function. The sober yet expressive treatment of the face, the simplified volumes of the body, and the marked frontality are characteristic of the late Gothic tradition, before the introduction of Renaissance canons. Traces of old polychromy are visible, especially reds and flesh tones. The reverse is roughly hollowed out, indicating an architectural purpose. Wear, losses of polychromy, small dents, and surface alterations are consistent with age and liturgical use. The piece is coherent and has not been reassembled. France. Late 15th century. 66 x 33 cm. 70 x 24 x 30 cm. 85 x 30 x 35 cm. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permit from the country of origin may be required.
