Description
Important high-relief panel from the 16th century Flemish Renaissance
An important high-relief panel carved from wood, depicting a lively religious narrative scene, probably inspired by an episode from the Passion of Christ. The composition, with its high dramatic intensity, evokes a biblical sermon or miracle, featuring a central staircase symbolising ascent and descent, a pulpit serving as a platform, and an attentive crowd with several male figures rendered with remarkable sense of movement and expressiveness. In the foreground, a figure lies on the ground, while several executioners bustle about; in the background, an assembly observes the scene from an elevated platform, structured by a monumental staircase. The intricately worked relief features strongly characterized faces, dynamic and contrasting drapery folds, and dynamic poses that lend the composition great narrative force. The wood has a dark patina. The piece is housed in a gilded and moulded wooden frame that enhances the composition. This work belongs to the tradition of 16th-century European religious reliefs. 72 x 62 cm. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permit from the country of origin may be required.
