Description
Chancay Mask, 12th and 14th centuries AD, Pre-Columbian Art 32 x 30 x 3.5 cm. This mask belongs to the Chancay culture, one of the pre-Columbian civilizations that inhabited the central coast of present-day Peru between the 12th and 14th centuries AD. It is believed that these masks had a ritual and funerary function, possibly associated with elite burials or with symbolic representations in ceremonies. The mask is carved from wood and has a simple but expressive shape. Its surface is painted red, a colour that in many pre-Columbian cultures had a ritual significance linked to life, death, and fertility. The piece shows signs of wear and restoration, including an area with fibre woven in the lower right, possibly to reinforce the material or repair damage. One of the most striking elements of this mask is the textile headdress that adorns it. This fabric is made of natural fibre, decorated with geometric patterns in dark, red, and ochre tones, with stripes of abstract designs reminiscent of characteristic motifs of the Chancay culture. The fringes and ties suggest that it may have been an original element of the mask or a later addition, perhaps to strengthen its ritual symbolism.
