Description
Portuguese chest of drawers in rosewood, Portuguese School, 18th Century. Pausanto wood (Brazil). Dimensions: 105 x 137 x 65 cm. An important Portuguese chest of drawers from the early 18th century, designed with a sinuous structure and striking stage presence. The front is organised into five drawers, two small upper drawers and three wide drawers, with finely crafted bronze fittings in the form of handles and keyholes decorated with rocaille and filigree motifs. The curved sides, framed by scroll and acanthus carvings that rise from the base to the cornice, accentuate the dynamism of the design. Pausanto, a fine wood of Brazilian origin, displays an intense colour range and contrasting grain, qualities that, together with the polished finish, confer great visual richness. The undulating composition of the front and the carved legs are inscribed within the Portuguese Baroque style, characterized by sumptuousness and ornamental refinement, closely linked to the Luso-Brazilian tradition of prestigious furniture. Its workmanship reveals both the craftsmanship excellence and the historical value of this type, intended for aristocratic and courtly settings. The piece is in very good condition, with a patina that reinforces its authenticity and relevance within 18th-century Portuguese furniture.
