Description
Ebonized wood secretaire inlaid with ivory and hard stones, attributed to Ferdinando Pogliani, Italian School, 19th Century Ebonized wood inlaid with ivory and hard stones. Dimensions: 170 x 104 x 52 cm. Magnificent 19th-century Italian secretaire attributed to Ferdinando Pogliani, a prominent Milanese cabinetmaker renowned for his luxurious compositions in dark woods enhanced with ivory and semiprecious stone inlays. The structure features an upper body with flanked compartments and drawers, crowned by turned balustrades and pyramidal finials, which lend a vertical and monumental character to the design. The richly ornamented hinged lid reveals several drawers and storage spaces, designed for writing and document organization. The exterior features a figurative decoration on the lid, featuring an allegorical scene of cherubs and mythological figures in an aquatic setting, executed in delicate polychrome inlay, surrounded by geometric frames and plant scrolls. The piece rests on fluted, turned legs joined by cut-out crossbars, ensuring stability and elegance. The combination of the deep black of the ebony finish with the whiteness of the ivory and the polychrome of the precious stones creates a striking visual contrast, characteristic of the work of Pogliani and his workshop. A work of the highest technical and decorative quality, it reflects the refined Italian historicism of the 19th century and is preserved in perfect condition after careful restoration.
