Description
Pair of large armchairs. French School. 19th century. Carved and gilded wood with applied gold leaf. Dimensions: 129 x 74 x 66 cm. This pair of imposing armchairs features a richly ornamented, monumental structure with an oval backrest framed by elaborate plant carving culminating in a cornice crowned with floral motifs and high-relief scrolls. The armrests are crowned with stylized lion heads, lending the piece a majestic character. The seat and backrest, upholstered in black velvet in stark contrast to the gilding, enhance the elegance of the ensemble. The composition reveals high-quality workmanship, with meticulous attention to detail, smoothly polished surfaces, and a careful application of gilt that accentuates the volumes and sculptural qualities of the ensemble. These characteristics are representative of 19th-century French historicist-inspired furniture, particularly the Napoleon III style, which revived Baroque and Rococo models with a theatrical and lavish imprint. The complex falls within the decorative tradition of a palace reception hall or salon, standing out for its visual impact and technical refinement.
