Description
Pair of traditional Chinese ink and colour paintings on paper featuring a literati and a buffalo
Pair of traditional ink and light colour paintings on paper, framed under glass. The composition depicts a seated scholar, dressed in a wide striped robe, meditating or reading beside a kneeling buffalo, richly draped with a tapestry of polychrome hexagonal decoration. Chinese characters appear in the lower left, along with the artist's inscription and signature, as well as several red seals, typical of the classical method of authentication and validation in scholarly painting. The overall tonality, in soft browns, greens, and blacks, suggests an art intended for contemplation, in which the man, the book, and the animal embody the communion between nature, knowledge, and serenity. Good condition, with old traces of craquelure and surface wear, and the paper is slightly wavy. China. Qing Dynasty. 18th-19th centuries. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permit from the country of origin may be required.
