Description
Oriental writing set with mythological figures and inkwell, 20th century. Weight: 1,080 g.
Reddish-hued stone with a lacquered finish, carved using sculptural techniques. Dimensions: 17 x 10 x 7 cm; weight: 1,080 g. This substantial and meticulously crafted oriental writing set features a richly carved rectangular base decorated with undulating relief motifs. Two mythological sculptures, identifiable as Foo dogs or guardian lions-traditional protective figures in Chinese and Japanese culture-are depicted on the surface. These figures are robust, expressive, and feature abundant detail in their manes and limbs. The inkwell, topped with a sculpted lid in the shape of a Daruma doll, is integrated into the central area, adding a strong symbolic and decorative element to the piece. The lacquered finish enhances the volume and depth of the carvings, creating subtle contrasts between the polished areas and the more pronounced reliefs. This is a complete writing set conceived both as a functional object and as an ornamental piece, representative of the oriental taste for the combination of utility, symbolism and meticulous craftsmanship.
