Description
Exceptional Roman Marble Head of Hercules, Roman Empire - 2nd-3rd Century AD
13.5 x 10 x 4 cm. Formerly in a European private collection. The "Head of Heracles" is a small marble sculpture (13.5 x 10 x 4 cm) dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD, during the height of the Roman Empire. This work depicts the mythological hero Heracles (Hercules in Roman tradition) wearing his characteristic Nemean lion skin, a symbol of one of his Twelve Labors. The white marble with a yellowish patina indicates its age, and the fine detail of the features suggests the use of meticulous tools in its making, although the exact technique used is not specified.
