Description
Pair of muzzle-loading travel pistols with flintlock and tilting bayonet, European School, 19th century
Iron and wood. Dimensions: 24 cm. Pair of European flintlock travel pistols, made in the first half of the 19th century, with a flintlock mechanism and short iron barrels, slightly flared at the muzzle. Each piece incorporates folding tilting bayonets at the bottom, which increased its defensive versatility on journeys. The wooden stocks, with curved grips and a compact design, reflect the common typology of portable weapons intended for self-defense at the time. The engraved details in the trigger guard and key area lend a handcrafted character to the manufacture. Their state of preservation shows oxidation and signs of use, reinforcing their historical authenticity, although they are obsolete for functional use. These weapons are part of the 19th-century European weapons tradition, where the combination of compactness, practicality, and accessories such as the bayonet reflect technical inventiveness and the need for protection during travel and movement.
