Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Barrias and Coutan, Charles Maillard began his career at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901, becoming a regular exhibitor. He also took part in the boom in monumental sculpture after the First World War.
From the 1920s onwards, he developed a major collaboration with the Henriot factory in Quimper, playing a key role in the revival of Breton decorative arts. The Breton theme appeared in his work around 1926 and became central to his ceramic production.
For Henriot, he designed numerous polychrome earthenware models, mainly Breton genre scenes and figures for tableware and decoration: bigoudènes, knife holders, jugs and decorative groups. These editions, which were widely distributed, reflect his adaptation to the decorative language of the manufactory, while retaining a quality of modelling that stemmed from his training as an academic sculptor.
His work for Quimper is part of a decorative production that is emblematic of the inter-war period, and is now sought-after on the art market.
