Description
Mathurin MÉHEUT (1882-1958) - Manufacture HENRIOT in Quimper From the Sea service Round plate with two fish in polychrome earthenware Signed on the back Henriot Quimper 133 and monogrammed MM Diameter: 24.5 cm Minor firing defects Mathurin Méheut (1882-1958) A major figure in 20th-century French decorative arts, Mathurin Méheut's work was deeply inspired by the maritime world, Brittany and its traditional trades. Trained at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and then in Paris, he made a name for himself with his highly expressive drawings, nourished by direct observation. His collaboration with the Henriot factory in Quimper, which began in the 1920s, gave rise to the famous Service de la mer (Sea Service), an emblematic collection of Breton ceramics. Using a naturalist and decorative vocabulary, fish, shellfish and market scenes come to life in a vigorous and instantly recognisable style. Expert : Philippe JAMAULT
