Robert Micheau-Vernez (1907-1989)
Robert Micheau-Vernez was an artist from Brest who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes and then in Paris (Lucien Simon's studio). He developed a multi-faceted body of work combining painting, illustration and the decorative arts.
From 1930 onwards, he began a decisive collaboration with the Henriot factory in Quimper, following his exhibition at the Saluden gallery in Brest. He produced over a hundred earthenware models, making his creations one of the major signatures of the factory's production during the inter-war and post-war years.
His compositions, inspired by Brittany and its traditional costumes, are distinguished by their high colour quality and strong decorative sense. His ceramics work, which was widely distributed, made a major contribution to his reputation, sometimes to the detriment of his pictorial work, which was nonetheless an essential part of his career.
