Born into a family of musicians from Alsace, Jacques Lehman, known as Nam, entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris around 1900, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme. It was during this period that he developed a marked interest in the animal world, regularly visiting the Jardin des Plantes where he produced his first drawings of animals.
A recognised wildlife artist, Nam devoted much of his work to the study and representation of fauna, a field in which he acquired a solid reputation and took part in numerous exhibitions. At the same time, he worked as a political cartoonist, collaborating with several newspapers of the day.
His varied oeuvre also includes paintings, drawings and sculptures, testifying to a multi-faceted artistic practice. From the 1920s onwards, he worked with the HB factory in Quimper, for whom he designed six stoneware models in the tradition of Breton decorative arts.
