René Quillivic is a major figure in Breton art of the 20th century. Born in Plouhinec in 1879, he came from a modest background. Trained in Paris after starting out as a self-taught artist, he gradually established himself on the national art scene while remaining deeply attached to his native land, which he made the focus of his work.
His name is still associated with the many war memorials he created in the aftermath of the First World War, particularly in Brittany. However, this emblematic production is only one aspect of an exceptionally long and prolific career. Over more than six decades, Quillivic developed a personal body of work devoted to the men and women of Brittany, whose dignity, simplicity and strength of character he portrayed with sensitivity.
A renowned sculptor, he also paints, engraves and ceramics. His style, marked by a great formal sobriety and a profound humanism, bears witness to a constant desire to celebrate the Breton identity while giving it a universal scope. René Quillivic has been exhibited at major Parisian art fairs and has won several awards. Today, he occupies an essential place in the history of Breton art and remains one of its most emblematic representatives.
Through his work, René Quillivic expresses his deep attachment to Brittany and its people, a central theme that runs through the whole of his artistic output.
