Alphonse Chanteau was a painter, illustrator and ceramist who trained with Luc-Olivier Merson and Albert Besnard. He was appointed official painter to the Navy in 1910 and developed a rich body of work, inspired by Brittany, where he regularly stayed in Morgat.
From 1920-1930, he worked with the HB factory in Quimper, at the heart of the development of the so-called "Odetta" production. Alongside artists such as Louis Garin and Georges Brisson, he helped renew the decorative repertoire of Quimper earthenware and stoneware.
His work for Quimper is fully in keeping with the Art Deco aesthetic of the inter-war period, and remains sought-after today for its originality and strong graphic identity.
