François-Marie Caujan was a sculptor and ceramist trained in Brest, Nantes and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was part of the Breton artistic movement between the wars. A close friend of Saint-Pol-Roux and a member of the "Phalange bretonne" group, he played an active role in regional and Parisian artistic life, exhibiting at the major Salons from the mid-1920s onwards.
He worked with the HB-Henriot factory in Quimper from the late 1920s, alongside artists such as René Quillivic and Louis Garin, contributing to the revival of Breton artistic earthenware. His repertoire, centred on Breton figures, sailors and genre scenes, was widely distributed in polychrome earthenware editions.
The artist signed his works under his own name for his most daring creations, reserving the pseudonym "Fanch" for more decorative and commercial models, intended for production by the HB factory. His work played a key role in the development of Quimper ceramics between the wars.
