Description
Georges RENAUD (1904-1994) - Manufacture HB Quimper Miniature polychrome earthenware jug bearing the effigy of Ulysse Simpson Grant, President of the United States between 1869 and 1877 Titled around the base Height 6.5 cm A sculptor trained in Paris, Georges Renaud began his career working in bronze, notably participating in the restoration of the candelabras on the Alexandre III bridge. He joined the HB factory in Quimper in 1928 through François Bazin. An important figure in the revival of HB's ceramic production, he contributed to the stylistic development of the so-called Odetta period alongside René Beauclair, bringing a strong sense of relief and decorative composition. His creations in stoneware and earthenware are characterised by their expressive force and their stylisation. In the 1930s, he produced some outstanding pieces for the manufactory, including exotic decorations presented at the 1931 Colonial Exhibition (awarded a gold medal), as well as a series of Breton and international-themed jugs, vases and dishes. After the Second World War, he continued to work regularly with HB, enriching the company's repertoire with bas-relief scenes, Breton figures and narrative compositions until the 1960s. His work plays an essential role in the visual identity of HB's twentieth-century production, combining decorative modernity with ethnographic inspiration. Expert: Philippe JAMAULT
