Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Brest and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Paul Fouillen settled in Quimper where he became a major figure in the revival of Breton ceramics between the wars.
After working with HB-Henriot in the 1920s and 1930s, he set up his own studio in 1945, continuing to produce independently while maintaining a strong link with the Quimper aesthetic. His ceramics are characterised by a highly personal language, combining stylised forms, Celtic influences and modern inspirations close to Art Deco.
For HB, he designed earthenware and stoneware pieces characterised by dynamic decorations, geometric motifs and a strong simplification of volumes. His work contributed to the evolution of Quimper's decorative style towards a more modernist and structured expression.
A key figure in twentieth-century Breton ceramics, Paul Fouillen occupies a unique position between regional tradition and plastic modernity.
